OSBA offers guidance on new Healthy and Safe Schools Plans

The State Board of Education adopted new rules this week requiring that public school districts, education service districts (ESDs) and charter schools submit to the state a preliminary safety and health plan by Oct. 1.

To date, confusion has been rampant over testing protocols, proposed rules, costs, coverage and risks associated with lead testing. But now that the rule has been adopted, there should be more clarity as school entities focus on completing their Healthy and Safe Schools Plan.

To assist school entities in complying, OSBA staff have developed a guidance document outlining the rules. For more information about drinking water and lead in schools, view the FAQ.

In addition, state health officials are planning a webinar at noon this Wednesday, Aug. 24, on the new rules. Tune in live on YouTube, or for more information see the State of Oregon website.
