New webinar this week

Child sexual abuse is a pervasive societal problem. It is also one of the more uncomfortable conversations that need to happen not only in society, but in educational settings as well. This webinar training will discuss statistics, the grooming process, how to spot a predator in the context of institutions, and how to help prevent sexual abuse from occurring in your school.

Date: Feb. 22
Time: 12 p.m.
Presenter: McKenzie Nix, sex abuse prevention consultant

We all have been told to never take or send explicit content of yourself. However, we know it still happens. Especially among our student population.

First rule of taking explicit photos/videos is to NOT take explicit photos/videos. Second rule: If you do create explicit content, make sure your face is not in it. Once shared, these images can spread uncontrollably across the internet, causing long-term damage to one’s reputation and mental well-being. Additionally, the recipient may not be trustworthy, leading to the misuse or manipulation of the shared content. And even if the recipient is trustworthy, it doesn’t mean everyone who has access to their device is trustworthy. It’s crucial for students to understand the implications and the importance of respecting personal boundaries and privacy.

However, life happens. Mistakes happen, or someone violates your privacy or trust. If a minor’s explicit content does get shared online there is help available, and they do not have to suffer in silence. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has a wonderful free program called Take It Down: “This service is one step you can take to help remove online nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit photos and videos taken before you were 18”. There is hope.

“Because of societal taboos, for many years we’ve faced an uphill battle in reporting grooming behaviors that place young people in harm’s way,” says PACE Administrator Dave Harvey. “As a society we need to do better, and as an institution PACE is committed to leading the way.”
